Original Italian antique storage chest from the 17th century, originating from the Alpine region between the Aosta Valley and Upper Piedmont. Carved from a single massive oak trunk, it represents a remarkable example of traditional craftsmanship from the Western Alps and survives today in exceptionally original condition.
For centuries, chests of this type were essential household furnishings, used to store bread, flour and other dry food supplies, protecting them from moisture and everyday use. Built for practicality rather than decoration, they were intended to serve a family for generations.
The most distinctive feature of this example is its construction. Instead of being assembled from individual boards, the main body was hollowed from a single tree trunk and later completed with its lid and supporting legs. This straightforward yet ingenious method of construction gives the piece a unique character and immediately sets it apart from more conventional antique storage chests.
Finding a seventeenth-century example that has survived in such complete originality, with its naturally developed patina and remarkable state of preservation, is exceptionally uncommon.
