Italian antique dough bin from the 18th century, made in the Piedmont-Savoy area, completely original, finished on all four sides and preserved in excellent structural condition.
For centuries, the dough bin was one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home. It was used for kneading bread dough as well as storing flour, bread and other dry food, keeping them protected from moisture. Built to withstand everyday use, these pieces were often handed down through several generations.
This example features the traditional hinged top opening onto a deep, gently splayed storage compartment. The shaped apron running around the base is enriched by a simple fluted carving at its centre, adding refinement while preserving the solid character typical of this type of furniture.
Its elegant proportions reflect the French influence that distinguished furniture produced in the Piedmont-Savoy region during the eighteenth century.
