Pastoral Scene with Livestock, Oil on Canvas Late 17th / Early 18th Century – Italian School (Rosa da Tivoli Circle)

Balance and distance in a pastoral landscape

Pastoral Scene with Livestock – oil on canvas, late 17th / early 18th century

Italian school, Roman area, in the manner of Rosa da Tivoli

The composition is built around a quiet equilibrium, where nothing dominates yet everything holds together.

The livestock gathers naturally in the foreground: a standing cow balanced by another resting on the ground, while the sheep are distributed in a way that creates a continuous visual flow rather than a fixed arrangement. The eye moves through the group without interruption, guided more by weight than by design.

The shepherd remains secondary, partially absorbed by the landscape. His presence is functional, not narrative. The scene does not unfold through action, but through balance.

The landscape follows the same logic. A darker mass of trees anchors the left side, while the background opens gradually into a lighter distance. Depth is not constructed through contrast, but through transition.

Light plays a precise role. It does not dramatize the scene, but defines the volumes and keeps the surfaces coherent. At certain points it becomes more evident, sliding gently across the white cow’s coat and giving the form a quiet clarity without isolating it from the whole.

What matters here is control:

the solidity of the animals
the measured spacing between forms
the continuity between foreground and distance

From a stylistic perspective, the painting belongs to the late Baroque period, at a moment when the visual language begins to soften into a more open and pastoral sensibility. It reflects the tradition of landscape with animals developed in the Roman area, in dialogue with Northern European models, particularly those associated with Philipp Peter Roos.
