Umbrian–Tuscan merchant’s door, 18th century
18th-century door from a rural building between Umbria and Tuscany, crafted in softwood following the merchant’s model once used for the outer entrances of workshops and storage rooms.
The front side, built with horizontal planks joined on a slant and fixed with hand-forged nails, shows the public face of the door — made to withstand rain, sun, and time.
The reverse, with its full vertical boards, reveals the private side, the one that looked inward, where the years have written their truest marks.
Its colour — a powdery blue now softened by age — still retains surprising strength: a vivid, ancient tone that today alone could give character to a whole room.
Not yet restored, it will undergo a careful conservative restoration, preserving its lived surface and authentic soul while regaining full solidity and usability.
A piece capable of transforming any space: as a scenic backdrop, as an interior doorway, or as a decorative wall element, it carries the unpredictable charm of the past — that unique visual impact no imitation can recreate.
