Pair of Mercantile Double-Leaf Doors – 18th Century
(119 x 208 cm)
Solid and authentic, these double-leaf doors from the 18th century embody the character of rural architecture in Umbria and Tuscany. On the outer side, they feature the traditional “mercantile” structure, with transverse elm braces set on a slant and reinforced with dense wrought-iron nails—a simple yet striking construction, originally made to endure, recalling the storerooms and farmhouses of the countryside.
The inner side is more restrained: a solid frame composed of wide vertical planks, tightened by sturdy iron straps. A functional, straightforward design that has preserved its original strength.
Clean and full of character, the doors remain intact and well preserved, ready for a careful restoration that will enhance the patina and the living substance of the ancient wood.
Today they can be used both outdoors and in refined interiors, where there is no room for the ordinary. These doors furnish on their own: they bring into the space the rugged force of aged wood, the strict geometry of the nailwork, and they have the power to transform any setting into a place with atmosphere and identity.
