Pair of Louis XVI Bedside Tables – Marche, ca. 1770–1780
An authentic pair, remarkably preserved and still together after more than two centuries, despite the many turns of time: inheritances, relocations, changes of home. Never separated, never neglected.
These two comoncini come from the Marche region and date to the height of the Louis XVI period, around 1770–1780. They are veneered with walnut lastronatura and decorated with inlaid stringing in boxwood and rosewood, carefully combined to create balanced and refined chromatic contrasts. The repeating diamond motif, laid out with precision across the tops, sides and drawer fronts, is a rare and elegant detail, executed with a skilled hand and a sharp sense of proportion.
Their design follows the principles of neoclassical style: clean volumes, balanced proportions, squared and understated profiles.
Each table features two drawers with flush-mounted fronts and interiors lined in poplar wood, a typical material of central Italy at the time. The drawers still retain their original hand-forged nails, with butterfly-shaped heads, a distinctive trait of furniture from the second half of the 18th century.
These were not rustic pieces intended for peasant homes, but cultured furnishings, likely made for a refined residence, where the quality of the materials and the restraint of the decoration spoke a subtle, but unmistakable, language.
They have never been restored—only structurally consolidated, with full respect for the original materials and without alterations or additions.
Authentic, high-quality pieces—for those who know how to recognise true craftsmanship.
