“Biscuit”-shaped center table in gilt wood with onyx top – Central Italy, early 19th century
A small salon table crafted in Central Italy in the early 1800s.
Originally designed as an occasional table for a sitting room—whether placed centrally or at the side—it features a carved wood structure gilded with gold leaf. The sprung legs are connected by a shaped stretcher, at the center of which a round-carved acanthus leaf serves as a visual and structural focal point.
The tabletop, with its signature “biscuit” profile echoing the smooth curves of the base, is made of natural onyx. Warm-toned and harmonious with the gilding, the slab is composed of four mirrored bookmatched sections, with a butterfly vein arrangement creating a perfectly symmetrical central motif—a testament to meticulous craftsmanship.
The conservatory restoration preserved the original gilding, consolidating and touching up where needed, while retaining its aged patina.
An authentic, solid, and well-proportioned piece, equally at home in classical or contemporary interiors. Ideal as an accent in neutral spaces, where the material presence and dialogue between antique and modern bring character and balance.
