19th-Century Bridge Bookcase from an Old Umbrian Hardware Store

Umbrian Bridge Bookcase in Painted Fir – Second Half of the 19th Century

Bridge-style bookcase of Umbrian manufacture, made in the second half of the 19th century from solid fir, painted in a thin tempera finish in lime white.

The structure consists of two lateral elements with open shelving and lower cupboards, joined at the top by a connecting section with additional open shelves. The front uprights are marked by a small decorative incision—simple yet distinctive.

Originally, it belonged to a shop or hardware store (mesticheria), where the back panel was simply the wall to which it was fixed; for this reason, it is now open at the rear. Should one wish, a back can be added, though the openness is part of its original character.

Well restored and entirely original, it can be disassembled for easier transport.

Today, it can be reimagined in many ways: in a living room, framing a sofa or console table with a painting above; as a frame for a television; in a study, with the niche holding an artwork, a reading chair, and a desk in front; or as a theatrical backdrop for a library corner.

A piece born for work, ready to live a second life in today’s domestic or professional spaces.
