Faldistorio sofa, antique ceremonial seat

Faldistorio-style walnut sofa with brass fittings – Siena, mid-19th century

A rare and distinctive mid-19th-century sofa, crafted in Siena from solid walnut. The design recalls the ancient faldistorio, a seat of prestige once used by nobles and dignitaries, here reinterpreted in the 19th century as a fixed piece for the salon.

Its structure, with gently curved side supports and sturdy base stretchers, is strong and stable—ready for everyday use without concern. The backrest is divided into two shaped panels separated by a carved central element, while brass finials at the top add a refined, decorative touch.

The piece is completely intact and original, carefully restored and newly upholstered in quilted damask with shaped borders and tasselled trimming, perfectly in keeping with its historical character.

In the past, seats of this kind were often placed in antechambers, corridors, and palace galleries, serving not only a practical function but also as a mark of status. Today, this sofa could be the focal point of a grand entrance, a reception room, or an elegant study—bringing together the solidity of solid walnut, the allure of rarity, and the comfort of a piece still entirely fit for use.
