Pair of Marche Stools – Small but Strong in Presence

Pair of Baroque-Style Giltwood Stools – Marche, Late 18th to Early 19th Century

Two compact, assertive pieces, carved in the Marche region between the late 1700s and the very early 1800s. Solid wood frames, hand-carved and gilded, with boldly curved legs and sharply profiled lion’s paw feet.

Their proportions are sturdy and substantial – a little stocky, yet full of character – with a warm patina that tells the story of more than two centuries of life.

At the time, it was not unusual for craftsmen to replicate Baroque models from more than a century earlier. In many aristocratic or ecclesiastical settings, new furniture was made to blend seamlessly with existing pieces, preserving the decorative language of the 17th century to maintain continuity and prestige. In provincial areas such as the Marche, the Baroque and Barocchetto styles persisted far longer, preferred to the more restrained lines of the emerging Neoclassical for their scenographic richness and their ability to convey a sense of solidity and antiquity.

The seats, reupholstered in blue fabric, rest on structures that have been reinforced, cleaned, and lightly retouched. Perhaps originally placed in front of a fireplace as footstools, or beside an armchair as occasional seating, today they can easily become statement pieces that make all the difference in any setting, even a modern one: at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or as a refined, decorative accent in a contemporary interior.
