Pair of “Capretta” Side Tables – Central Italy, Second Half of the 18th Century
In the rural homes and farmhouses of 18th-century Central Italy, there was no room for superfluous furniture: every piece had to be useful, sturdy, and ready to serve in many ways. It was in this context that the so-called “capretta” tables were born—small, multi-purpose pieces, made of fir wood, with a simple top and a practical drawer.
They could be found by the hearth, holding dishes or a basket of firewood; in the kitchen, for shelling beans or preparing vegetables; in the bedroom, as a stand for a water jug or for storing small personal belongings. They often accompanied the most modest domestic and agricultural tasks—faithful, hard-working companions of everyday rural life.
The pair offered here preserves all of that original spirit: two authentic 18th-century examples from Central Italy, carefully consolidated and restored, cleaned and wax-finished, ready to return to use without losing their authenticity.
Today, they adapt with ease to contemporary interiors: as bedside tables beside a bed—perfect both in a minimal, essential setting and in a shabby-chic context; as side tables next to an armchair or a woven rush-seat chair; near a fireplace, beside a sofa, or as small stands for a lamp or a vase of flowers.
Their value does not lie in elaborate design, but in the strength of their humility: furniture born for daily work, now transformed into elements of character, capable of bringing the warmth of a hard-working, authentic world into today’s homes.
