Pharmacy cabinet, made for the art of healing

Gothic Revival Pharmacy Cabinet – Tuscany, Early 19th Century

Rare Tuscan pharmacy cabinet, crafted in the very early 1800s entirely from gattice wood. It is fully original and has been restored according to conservative restoration principles.

The structure is composed of three distinct vertical sections. Each features an upper part with glazed doors framed by carved bilobed arches, and a lower part with solid panelled doors decorated with sinuously shaped geometric mouldings.

The three sections are divided by a series of pillars, consisting of lower pilasters with opening compartments and full-round turned columns above. These are enriched with stylized floral carvings—typical elements of the decorative language of the Gothic Revival style, a movement that emerged between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries, reviving medieval aesthetics with updated proportions and refined architectural references.

This cabinet was designed to meet specific professional needs, where form followed function. The glass-fronted sections were used for the neat display of albarelli and apothecary jars containing medicinal preparations, while the lower compartments stored scales, instruments, registers, recipe books, and day-to-day supplies.

The quality of the construction, the attention to detail, and the harmony of its proportions reflect a time when the pharmacist was a central figure—guardian of knowledge and remedies—and their workspace a place of precision and order.

A furnishing piece that still carries the dignity and authority of its original role.

An authentic object with deep roots—a historical document whose rarity and excellent condition make it a perfect acquisition for collectors, antique lovers, or anyone wishing to bring a touch of authenticity and prestige to their space.

It has been restored with care and respect, without erasing its history, preserving the visible traces of over two centuries of use.
